Company
We give people back control over their information.
A young company in Austin, Texas, building one place for everything important in your life.
Mission
Give every person control over their own information.
What we believe.
You are the source of your own information.
For decades, organizations kept copies of our information and decided what to do with them. We think it’s the wrong way round: you keep it, and decide who sees it, why and for how long.
Your data is yours. Not ours.
Unidy stores, protects and processes it only for the services you choose. Nothing else.
You decide who reaches you.
Nobody should reach you just because they once kept a copy of your details.
Organizations take part. They never own your identity.
The problem is the system, not the people in it. Companies connect with your Unidy because you allow it. In the model we’re working toward, they ask your Unidy instead of keeping a copy of you.
Why we build Unidy.
Why now
People used to live in one home for decades. Now our address, city, country, phone or email changes again and again, and each change goes to hundreds of organizations, each with its own copy of us.
For digital nomads, details change with the seasons: a different home and phone number for each part of the year.
Meanwhile, organizations ask for more every year, far more than they need.
Where this goes: “Give me your Unidy.”
Today you share your details and documents with people you choose. Our vision adds companies: instead of a form, a company asks your Unidy. You decide what it sees and for how long.
How Unidy grows
Useful from day one, even before anyone you know joins, and more as they do. Organizations adopt what their customers already use.
- You use Unidy on your own: your documents, their dates, your digital business card, your CV
- You share your digital business card or a document. The person opens it with no account, and meets Unidy
- As more people join, keeping each other's details current gets easier
- With enough of us, organizations have a reason to ask your Unidy instead of handing you a form
How Unidy makes money
Unidy has been designed from day one to be free: no payment, no credit card. That includes your standard Unidy ID, 1 GB for your documents, your CV, expiry reminders and sharing documents safely.
Unidy is still a business. Where its money comes from, and where it never will:
- Never by selling your personal information.
- Optional extras, priced before you pay: a personalized Unidy ID, like unidy.me/your.name; a document checked as genuine by an independent service, for when a bank, a landlord or an employer asks for proof; more space beyond your free 1 GB.
- New services inside Unidy, always optional. What’s free stays free.
- In the long term, messages on subjects you said yes to. A company may pay to send one, only inside Unidy, never to your email inbox.
The company paying never receives anything about you: not your name, address, phone number or email address. Unidy delivers its message to the people who said yes. You decide whether to read it, or that no company ever reaches you.
Many companies won’t like this: here they never get their customers’ details. It works once there are millions of us, enough to accept no other way.
Unidy does not ask for blind trust
Any service that keeps your information asks you to trust whoever runs it. We won’t pretend otherwise. Unidy holds the keys, so a lost phone never means lost documents, and Unidy can read an expiry date and make each recipient’s copy. We make a break-in worth as little as we can. One key per person, and each document has its own key. No master key. The keys are kept apart from your information.
The security page says exactly what protects your information, and what doesn’t.
